This kabuki theater was built in 1922 as a goraku (entertainment) house for those who worked in the coal mines of the Chikuho region, and was remodeled in 1931. This two-story wooden structure has Hanamichi walkways extending from either side of its stage into the audience and Masu (box) seating, which can be called the architype structure of Edo-period kabuki theaters. It has been designated as a national registered tangible cultural property. The old-fashioned playhouse mechanisms, such as the man-powered revolving stage and Seri (stage elevator), which are rarities today, still remain. The Zenkoku Zacho Taikai, a day of performances by the country’s top itinerant Kabuki troupe, held here each year is particularly famous.
